The Hollywood celebrities were heading to Broadway, where the stars attain lots of attention for their headlining efforts. On June 12th, the Tony Awards will be presented for the skills of any stage actors, lesser or known performers as well as famous or not, the value of the award will be presented to the talented person and it was film stars who are taking them away.
Last year, the star studded broadcast has disheartened many New York actors that also include Hunter Foster who has started an official group in the Facebook with the name ‘Give the Tonys Back to Broadway’. Currently, there are above 9000 members in that group. Hunter hoped to restore the ceremony as a beacon of hope for the upcoming generation of stage performers.
The nominees that were lacking in this year list were Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Robin Williams and Daniel Radcliffe. However, the executive editor of the Back Stage, David Sheward and a Tony voter have blogged about how the absence of well known nominees could be a response by the nomination committee to the last year’s backlash. A Tony represents the Holy Grail for a stage actor and can significantly boost a performer’s career. Besides them, the film and the television actors are already honored with awards like Emmy’s and Oscars.
New York stage veteran and Tony Winner, Victoria Clark said that all the celebrities coming to Broadway take work away from the New York theatre actors, but she also said that the industry should not separate the actors into the film, television and the stage categories. She argued that it is our culture that segregates them and if she were actors in any other country; they had all been doing everything without asking any questions.
