Lagaan, 2001 Bollywood sports film written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker had reached the nominations for Oscar awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film; although it could not grab the win the Oscar it has made it into the 25 best sports movies list of Time on the globe.
The movie goes back into the Victorian period of the India’s colonial British Ruling and revolves around the peasants from a barren village who are browbeaten by high taxes imposed by their rulers. They attempt to plead with the British officers to reduce the taxes because of poor agricultural produce. But the British offer a wager if their village team beats a British team in a game of cricket, then the wages will be waived off.
The film actors Aamir Khan took the lead role and he was also the producer for the film, stars with Gracy Singh in the lead roles; British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne play the supporting roles, this movie was filmed in an ancient village near Bhuj, India.
This movie has made a mark with taking the 14th spot of all time greatest sports movie. The film made it to the UK Top 10 after its commercial release.
