‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, a hit production in Canada is heading its way back to Broadway. The producers have announced that the rock musical about the last days of Jesus written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rive will be hitting New York City in the spring.
However, the previews will begin on 1st March at the Neil Simon Theatre and an official opening is set for 22nd March. The artistic director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Des McAnuff said that he is extremely happy for the company of actors because he thinks they anticipated that this might happen and he certainly have not discouraged them from believing that.
The guitar and keyboard driven musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ was debuted on Broadway in 1971 that includes songs like ‘What’s the buzz?’, ‘Superstar’, ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’. The original production has earned five Tony Award nominations including one for Ben Vereen, who played Judas. Besides, a film version was released in 1973.
Firstly, ‘Superstar’ was introduced as an album before being staged on Broadway and McAnuff said that his production is very faithful to the original recording. He said that they have treated it more like an opera than a musical. However, the latest stage production opened at the Canadian festival in June and ends its run there on 6th November just before moving to La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, California.
Hopefully, the producers will find a receptive Broadway audience that has already seen revivals of such 1970’s era shows as ‘Hair’ and ‘Godspell’ that starts performances later this month. McAnuff said that he think there is that great expression and he suppose that what it is.
