“Fast and Furious 6″ still rules the US (North American) box office – after beating “Now You See Me” debuts to a stunning result to beat strong competitor, Will Smith’s “After Earth”.
Despite a 65 % decrease, the high-octane flick starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker is able to finish in No. 1 by taking in an estimated $34.5m for the second week. The magician movie, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Morgan Freeman and Isla Fisher, admitted the second position with a great $28.1m as estimated. With strong word-of-mouth, the Summit Entertainment Picture is able to overshadow Sony’s sci-fi, which trails behind with a disappointing $27m approximately.
Of the poor start of “After Earth”, Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo tells that it happens because it is simply not “that appealing.” Besides the fact that M. Night Shyamalan’s name was hidden in the marketing, the role of Will as a debilitated soldier is “devoid of the charisma and energy that audiences expect from him.”
Tied for fourth place are “Star Trek Into Darkness” and “Epic”. The J.J. Abrams-directed feature and the animated film, which includes Beyonce Knowles in the cast, bag an estimated $16.4 million each. Check out the Top Ten Movies at US Box Office for May 31 – June 2:
