Action films Haywire and Underworld: Awakening clashed it out for second spot and third position, with Steven Soderbergh’s espionage movie earning £1.19 million against £1.11 million for Kate Beckinsale’s vampire sequel.

‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ and Meryl Streep’s ‘The Iron Lady’ complete the top fourth and fifth position. Jonah Hill comedy ‘The Sitter’ debuts at number six place with £910,382 from 355 theatres.

Oscar-tipped black and white film ‘The Artist’ maintains its striking run in the UK box office. Michel Hazanavicius’s epic to silent cinema boosts its box office takings from last week to earn £770,403 in ticket sales. The Artist has now earned more than £3 million from UK movie-goers.

Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar and W.E. fail to impress the top ten as they debut at numbers 12 and 14 places respectively. The latter, Madonna’s first major movie as a director, rakes £182,914 from 172 screen theaters.

BAFTA Awards 2012 nominations

’The Artist’ a drama movie has topped the BAFTA Awards 2012 nominations list that have been announced by ‘Harry Potter’ star Daniel Radcliffe, Holliday Grainger and Tim Corie the BAFTA Chairman. ‘The Artist’ has won the 12 nominations overall including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress. However, the winners will be announced at a ceremony on February 12, 2012 at the Royal Opera House in London with Stephen Fry as the host of the award show.

’The Artist’ is closely trailed by ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ that has bagged 11 nominations, which would compete with ‘The Artist’, ‘The Descendants’ and ‘Drive’ in ‘Best Film’ categories of BAFTA Awards 2012. Besides, it also won the nominations for Best Director, Outstanding British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. The other movie which managed to bag the multiple nods includes ‘Hugo’ with nine nominations, ‘My Week with Marilyn’ with six, ‘The Help’ and ‘War Horse’ winning five nods each.

Surprisingly, documentary film ‘Senna’ and ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ managed to grab the multiple nominations, as they received three nods each including ‘Outstanding British Film’ category. ‘Bridesmaids’ got two nods with Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Jeremy Renner’s ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ release date

It seems that, the upcoming Jeremy Renner starrer movie ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ will not be hitting the theaters this year, as it has been postponed for long release. The Paramount Pictures has announced that, the ‘Hansel and Gretel’ movie has been moved back from its original release date of March this year to a January release of next year.

The fairy tale adapted movie with Jeremy Renner in the lead role has been re-scheduled to arrive in the United States theaters on January 11, 2013, after it has been originally scheduled for release on March 2, 2012. As per the reports, the studio has rescheduled the movie, in order to get time to distribute a 3D version of ‘Hansel and Gretel’. The reports also added that, delaying the release of Jeremy Renner’s witch hunting movie, will also allow him to get exposure through his movies ‘The Avengers’ and ‘The Bourne Legacy’, which have been scheduled for release this year.

The story of the movie ‘Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters’ is set fifteen years, after the brother and sister duo killed the witch that has kidnapped them. Now, the siblings have become the bounty hunters, who will be pursuing witches. However, they face a corrupt town sherrif, who turns out to be their new enemy, during their adventure. ‘The Hurt Locker’ star will play the role of Hansel, while Gemma Arterton plays the role of his sister Gretel.
