Robert Downey Jr. starrer ‘Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadow’ claimed the top spot at the North American weekend box office, by grossing $40 million in its three-day screening.
Dan Fellman the Warner Bros. domestic distribution president said that, the $125 million budget movie ‘Sherlock Holmes 2’ was not expected to open with the same level of its predecessor. He expressed the hopes of doing well, as the Christmas holidays are coming up and insisted that, it would have decent box office revenues by that time and would reach the place, where the first movie has left.

A new entry ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked’ debuted at the second place in its debut weekend at US weekend box office. The live-action animated movie grossed $23.5 million. The movie was produced with a budget of $80 million. Another new entry ‘Mission Impossible 4: The Ghost Protocol’ landed in the third place in its debut weekend, by grossing $13 million. The Tom Cruise starrer movie was played in 425 IMAX screens, before it was widely released on December 21, 2011. It grossed a massive $32,000 per screen.

Rounding up the top five movies are ‘New Year’s Eve’ a star-studded movie and ‘The Sitter’ a R-rated adult comedy flick, both in fourth and fifth places grossing $7.4 million and $4.4 million respectively. ‘New Year’s Eve’ dropped with 43% on its second week, while ‘The Sitter’ dropped by 55% from its last week.
